About

This is a plea…

Consider it a wake-up call. A therapeutic cuff in the back of the head for the ridiculous and pathetic masses who assume famous people are smarter, wiser, happier or in any way more special than the rest of us. They’re not.

Being famous—in other words, having a face or name that is recognizable to large numbers of people—means only one thing. It means you have a face or name that is recognizable to large numbers of people. Period. Fame, or celebrity, tells you nothing about a person. But you wouldn’t know it by observing huge swaths of American and British culture.

Post-modern, post-Christian society hasn’t stopped being religious. The culture has simply replaced the old God with new gods. The new cathedrals and worship houses are concert halls and movie theaters. (See: New Gods/New Rituals)

The truth is, many, though not all, celebrities are dumber than rice. (And demonstrate it on a regular basis.) Many are fools in the purest, crystalline sense of the term. Many are genuinely unpleasant, dysfunctional people.

And an astonishing majority of famous folks—particularly in the pop culture realms of movies, television and music;—loudly hold political opinions that are idiotic. Nevertheless, the primary aim of the SWC movement and this website is not to hold celebrities up to ridicule or abuse. (Okay, maybe just a little. But only those who take themselves far too seriously.)  Being the object of inane adoration isn’t entirely their fault.

As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, the people truly deserving of our derision are those who fawn over famous people. Our target is the growing millions of, People Magazine-reading, MTV Cribs-watching, for-the-love-of-God-would-you-please-get-a-life, pop culture addicts who are making celebrity worship the fastest growing religion in the world.

These, we will taunt and second and, if necessary, a third time. And with our T-shirts, bumper stickers and coffee mugs, we will resist.
